NATCHITOCHES - The Native American Culture Association at Northwestern State University will hold a powwow Saturday, Jan. 23 in the NSU Friedman Student Union. Doors open at 9 a.m. and dancing starts at 10 a.m. Admission is free and open to the public.
A powwow is an event where Native American and non-Native American people meet to dance, sing, socialize, and celebrate the American Indian culture. Powwow time keeps many Native American traditions alive, provides an exciting and informative environment for non-native people and allows them the opportunity to experience firsthand the social, cultural, political and spiritual aspects of Native American life.
Seating is limited, those attending will be able to bring a lawn chair. Food vendors will be open from 11:30 a.m. - 6:30 p.m. Native American arts and crafts will be on display and for purchase on the second floor of the Student Union.
The powwow has received funding from the Cane River National Heritage Area, Northwestern State University and the Paragon Casino & Resort.
