NATCHITOCHES –Lauren Waguespack of Gonzales has been named Miss NSU and Jake Bryan of Pollock has been selected as Mr. NSU by students at Northwestern State University.
Bryan is a senior education major. He is the son of Ben and Kim Bryan. He is a member of the Demon football team and was a Freshman Connector orientation leader. Bryan is a member of Pi Kappa Phi Fraternity.
“I was surprised by the honor,” said Bryan. “It is the highest honor a student at Northwestern can receive. It means a lot to me to have been nominated for this award and that students voted for me.”
Bryan said being a member of the football team required a great deal of time, but it was important for him to be involved in other campus activities.
“Getting involved is one of the keys to enjoying college,” he said. “The more I became involved, the more people I met. And you never know how that could help you in the future. I am glad I decided to be a member of Pi Kappa Phi. It has been a great experience and the fellow members are really brothers to me. I have enjoyed every minute of it.”
Bryan plans to begin student teaching in the spring.
“Northwestern has been great for me,” said Bryan. “It feels like you are part of a family here. Wherever you go on campus, you know someone.”
Waguespack is the daughter of Mike and Belinda Waguespack. She is a senior theatre major. Waguespack was captain of the Demon Dazzlers and an officer in the Student Theatre Organization. She is a member of Sigma Sigma Sigma Sorority and founder of the Glee Club. Waguespack has appeared in several Northwestern Theatre and Dance productions.
“This is a great honor for me especially when I consider some of the outstanding women who were previously chosen as Miss NSU,” said Waguespack. “It shows the students at Northwestern care about involvement and appreciate it. This means everything to me.”
“In high school, I wasn’t really involved. But once I got to NSU, I was a member of the Dazzlers and started meeting people in sororities and other organizations. Once I started getting involved, I couldn’t say no when other opportunities came along.”
“The first time I was in a leadership role, I wasn’t the best at first, but I learned from it. I matured a great deal and learned how to serve with humility. Now I am a better worker and a harder worker. I feel like I can do anything.”
Waguespack plans to pursue a theatrical career with the goal of appearing on Broadway.
