Dance and French culture have been inseparable for centuries. Louis the XIV was an avid dancer himself and is said to have practiced the courante daily for 22 years while Pierre Beauchamps was his dancing master. The tradition of French dance spread to other courts in Europe, and is documented by the employment of French dancing masters. At German courts, dances became performed between the acts of Italian operas.
