NATCHITOCHES – A recital featuring period instruments will be performed by Dennette McDermott, Douglas Bakenhus and Francis Yang on Friday, Feb. 17 at 6 p.m. in the Louisiana School for Math, Science and the Arts Recital Hall. Admission is free and open to the public. McDermott, Bakenhus and Yang are members of the Creative and Performing Arts faculty at Northwestern State University.
A lecture by NSU Assistant Professor of Art Dr. John T. Dunn, “The Social Context of Baroque Instrumental Music” will preceed the recital at 5:30 p.m. Dunn will discuss the prominent social position of music and musicians in the aristocracy.
McDermott will perform on flute. Bakenhus will perform on bassoon and Yang will play harpsichord. The trio will play works by Boismortier, Blavet, C.P.E. Bach, Jiri Cart and Schaffrath.
McDermott recently acquired a harpsichord from the estate of Jay Means, a long-time faculty member in the Louisiana Scholars’ College. The instrument was built from a replica kit in the 1960s.
