NATCHITOCHES – Carla Howell has been named director of the Office of Research and Sponsored Programs at Northwestern State University. Her appointment has been approved by the Board of Supervisors for the University of Louisiana System.
Howell is responsible for enhancing faculty and staff performance related to funding for research and educational service by managing information resources, coordinating and conducting seminars and workshops, assisting with proposal development, quality review and approval of proposals. She will create and maintain institutional policies and procedures related to research and sponsored programs and serves as office representative with other university departments and collaborate on projects with other institutions and the community.
In her position, Howell will support the activities of committees for the protection of research subjects, patents and copyright, hazardous materials, internal seed/mini-grant programs and other campus-wide groups. She will review Office of Research and Sponsored Program publications and announcements for publication, ensure compliance with both sponsor, state and University guidelines for external proposals and oversee development and stewardship of relevant innovative technologies and practices institution-wide.
Howell has been a staff member at Northwestern State for 19 years. She worked in the Business Affairs office before moving into the Office of Research and Sponsored Programs in 2002. Howell served as grants manager and associate director before taking over as interim director in 2012.
Howell is a Northwestern State alumna, earning a bachelor’s degree in accounting. She has received the Certified Research Administrator designation from the Research Administrators Certification Council.
