NATCHITOCHES – Northwestern State University and Delgado Community College in New Orleans will sign a memorandum of understanding for a 2 + 2 program between the two schools. The 2 + 2 will allow students at Delgado students pursuing the Associate of Science in Nursing degree to complete the first two years of study at Delgado and transfer all credit hours to Northwestern State towards the completion of a Bachelor of Science degree in nursing.

A signing ceremony will take place at 2 p.m. Friday, Oct. 23 in the Cascade Room at Rapides Women’s and Children’s Hospital, 511 Medical Center Drive in Alexandria.

The partnership is mutually beneficial for the schools, administrators said. Delgado students who complete core requirements and obtain the associate degree will be able to transfer into the bachelor’s degree program and NSU will be assured those students are well prepared with foundation coursework. Northwestern State and Delgado are both accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS).

“Our relationship with Delgado will have a tremendously positive impact on healthcare in Louisiana,” said NSU President Dr. Jim Henderson. “The framework of this agreement helps inform students’ course selection, eliminates curriculum redundancies and streamlines the application process for these nurses.”

“These agreements between our institutions represent new avenues for our students to achieve their educational goals, and they represent a collaborative effort between higher education institutions from different parts of Louisiana, with different educational missions, to improve the state and its citizens,” said Delgado Chancellor Joan Y. Davis.

“We welcome the opportunity to help these nurses earn a baccalaureate degree on top of their associate degree,” said Dr. Dana Clawson, dean of NSU’s College of Nursing and School of Allied Health. “

“This articulation agreement allows Delgado Community College students earning an associate degree in nursing to complete studies for their bachelor’s degree online, which minimizes possible disruption in their employment and other obligations while they achieve their educational and career goals,” said Delgado’s Dean of Nursing Dr. Cheryl E. Myers.

Northwestern State has nursing and allied health education campuses in Alexandria, Shreveport and Leesville. Delgado has several locations in the greater New Orleans area.
