NATCHITOCHES – The Northwestern State University will have seven performances as part of its 2012-13 concert season, according to music director and conductor Dr. Douglas Bakenhus.
The season will feature top Northwestern State students and collaborations with Northwestern Theatre and Dance and choral groups as well as other areas of the Mrs. H.D. Dear Sr. and Alice E. Dear School of Creative and Performing Arts.
“This season will be another enjoyable one for our audience as well as the orchestra,” said Bakenhus. “We will perform well known classical works along with a variety of pieces that showcase the spectrum of outstanding music which is available.”
The orchestra’s first concert is on Thursday, Oct. 4 at 7:30 p.m. in Magale Recital Hall. Works by Dmitri Shostakovich, Paul Hindemith and Beethoven will be performed. 2012 NSU Concerto winner Mario Torres will be featured on viola.
On Thursday, Nov. 8 at 7:30 p.m., the annual Pops Concert will be held in Magale Recital Hall. This year’s Pops Concert is part of the City of Natchitoches’ Louisiana Bicentennial Celebration and will feature a number of works with Louisiana themes. The program will include the world premiere of Louisiana 1812 Overture by former Northwestern State faculty member Richard Rose and works by Virgil Thompson, Ferdie Grofé and Louis Gottschalk along with a tribute to Louis Armstrong.
The orchestra will join the Mrs. H.D. Dear Sr. and Alice E. Dear School of Creative and Performing Arts in presenting the annual Christmas Gala on Nov. 28-30 in the A.A. Fredericks Auditorium.
On Monday, Feb. 25, the orchestra will present a Young Person’s Concert at 9:30 a.m. in Magale Recital Hall which will include Russell Peck’s Thrill of the Orchestra and the Finale to Mozart’s Symphony No. 41.
That evening at 7:30 p.m. in Magale Recital Hall, winners of the annual NSU Concerto Competition will perform.
The orchestra will collaborate with Northwestern Theatre and Dance on a production of the musical West Side Story on March 20-24 at 7:30 p.m. in the A.A. Fredericks Auditorium.
They will conclude the season on Thursday, April 25 at 7:30 p.m. in Magale Recital Hall with a concert along with the NSU Symphony Chorus.
